Candice Bergen Checks Out What Lengths Pet Obsessed People Take to Pamper Their Furry Loved Ones

Oxygen's "Candice Checks It Out" Talks with a Pet Taxidermist, a Dr. Doolittle, and a Doggie Spa Owner on Sunday, September 8, 2002 at 9:30 p.m.*

September 2002 (Newstream) -- Host Candice Bergen may dress up her dogs for special occasions, but questions how much is too much when people's love for their pets includes massage therapy and freeze-drying. In this week's episode of Oxygen's "Candice Checks It Out," airing Sunday, September 8, at 9:30 p.m., "Pet Obsession" examines to what extremes owners go for their four-legged friends when it visits a pet taxidermist, a pet psychic and a dog wellness center.

Ms. Bergen discovers when a dog's spirit moves on to the next life, its body can stay on the couch. Mac McCullough, owner of Mac's Taxidermy in Pennsylvania, just expanded his business to include freeze-drying deceased pets. With just a freeze dryer and approximately $1500, Mr. McCullough can create a loving memorial for anyone interested in preserving Fluffy or Spot for years to come.

While Mr. McCullough's removes a customer's cat from the freeze-dryer, Ms. Bergen does not hold back her opinion when she exclaims, "Oh, my God! That is the ugliest cat I've ever seen. Oh, my God," she continues. "I have to take a picture of this -- it's so hideous."

Sonya Fitzpatrick, an animal communicator, chats with Ms. Bergen and the star's dogs as well. Host of the Animal Planet's new series, "The Pet Psychic," the real life Dr. Doolittle talks to the animals, while people pay her $300 an hour for her to get into their pets' psyches. Ms. Bergen checks out if her dogs, Louis and Harry, really do like the groomer and car.

Dog lovers may go as far as hosting doggie swim parties, as Ms. Bergen finds out. At Bonnie's K9, owner Jodi Richard services dogs from New York City that not only want a dip in the pool, but also need to lose weight and physical therapy. Ms. Bergen looks on at this dog spa, realizing its facilities pamper as much of the owners' well beings as its pets'.

Linda Corradina serves as the executive producer for "Candice Checks It Out," Oxygen's new half-hour weekly series in which host Candice Bergen takes to the streets to explore the latest trends and look into unfamiliar territory. The series' episodes repeat during the week on Oxygen on Mondays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 4 p.m.
